A Word about Dreams

A writer's dream

Hello! Thanks for visiting my blog, Dreamcraft. I'm Ally Preece.

Like my grandfather, writing for peace in the 1930’s, I have a writer’s dream, one I’ve been quietly pursuing for many years. I realize I’ve reached a turning point. I no longer feel and act like a teacher who writes. I’m a writer who teaches.

So I’m already living my writer’s dream, aren’t I?

But how can you tell when you’ve realized a dream as you follow where it leads?

Becoming a writer – like all the boldest of dreams – means setting out on a journey that brings its own rewards.  Yet that is not enough. Writers have something to say. And we’re sorry to bother you but we’re afraid it might be important; the cycle is only complete when we publish our work for readers to read. So here I am, moving forwards, reaching out further and trying not to let the scary feeling stop me from pressing the final button: Save and Publish.

At present, I’m preparing my debut novel for publication as an independent author: A Case of Conviction is a crime novel and romance set in the heart of England. Themes of justice and retribution intertwine with the personal story of Chloe Nightingale, a gifted young lawyer working hard to rebuild her life after a loss. My second novel, Catch Me in Your Dreams, is under way: a dramatic love story set in Italy, where I have made my home. I look forward to the day when you can read them.

If, like me, you love and value your reading, please subscribe to encourage and support me in my writer’s dream. And if you are a fellow writer, please reach out. And for everybody reading this, I hope Dreamcraft will encourage and support you in reaching for your dreams.

Can dreamcraft help me with my dreams?

But there are some dreams where dreamcraft cannot help. Some dreams we have to gently let go, realizing they simply cannot be: for all the medical and scientific advances, not every couple who yearn to become parents are destined to have a healthy child to love and raise. Like many mothers, I had to let go of my dream when I lost my first baby. In time, I grew to accept with my husband that we would live a meaningful life without the child we had so dearly loved and wanted. And in any case, wasn’t it too risky to try again? In time, we were blessed with a son and a second daughter, a wonderful epilogue to our story. But clearly, some dreams can never be realized as we dreamt.

Dreamcraft will not help you achieve such dreams. But experience has taught me the inherent value of setting and pursuing our dreams. If you have suffered irrevocable loss, by devoting time to following a dream that is within your power, you can begin to recapture a sense of dignity and control as you do something you personally believe to be worthwhile. Through focus and action towards your chosen dream – albeit not the one that has broken your heart – you’ll experience a sense of purpose and calm. And one day, you’ll notice that outside the sun has begun to shine again.

When I look at other dreamers, what do I see?

Can you picture yourself fulfilling your dream? Or do you envision it as one that only others can reach?

How do you think others achieved success – the artists, sportswomen, musicians, craftsmen and experts you admire? Through natural talent and good luck? Or through focus, organization, learning and sustained hard work?

No one succeeds in reaching challenging goals without taking such action. Combine this with your own wit and talent and some good fortune, too, and the sky’s the limit – or is it? Have you noticed that Elon Musk is not just dreaming of the day humanity will inhabit Mars and become a multi-planet species? As CEO and lead designer of SpaceX, he’s turning it into reality and building humankind’s safety net.

“You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great – and that’s what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. It’s about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I can’t think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars.”                     Elon Musk at the 68th International Astronautical Congress, Adelaide, Sept 2017.

There is no limit to how personal and creative our dreams can be or the impact they can have.

As The Beatles sang in All You Need Is Love,

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done.
